Cf. Yәsha·yâh′ u 34.4. This would be a vivid way to describe the mushroom clouds of the nuclear bombs dropped on Japan.
Cosmologists, physicists, and astronomers of today have perceived from the red-shift of the more distant stars that the heavens have been in the process of rolling away like a scroll being rolled up since the creation of the universe. These distant stars are leaving us at nearly the speed of light, causing the red-shift, in much the same way that sound from a source moving away from us lowers the pitch to us due to the Doppler effect.
Another possibility might be that the ancient writer saw something on the order of missiles, racing up and away from him in the night sky, like stars being rolled up like a scroll.
A more exotic scientific possibility lies in the incredible forces at work in the universe, such as black holes; and the amazing warping of the dimensions in their proximity. Black holes demonstrate hyper-light force(s) in their ability to suck in and hold light waves. Hyper-light force implies the possibility of hyper-light velocity, increasingly linked by physicists to paired, quantum entangled, particles that induce instant communications from one end of the universe to the other.
Hyper-light velocity presumes some revisions in our perceptions of some of our most basic "scientific" assumptions. Matter changes its basic characteristics at hyper-light velocities, transforming into pure forces no longer having the attributes of matter.
Time, which actually has been demonstrated to slow as velocities approach the speed of light, can be hypothesized to be in equilibrium at the speed of light, and reverse when velocities exceed that of light!
To grasp this concept requires that the dimension of time be perceived in much the same way as length, width, and depth—the first three dimensions; i.e., x4 rather than x3. The Creator, Who set these forces into motion and exercises control over them, isn't limited by time. In fact, the whole business of Prime Cause, and theorizing about who or what created the Creator, or if there was indeed such a creation, all become inane questions pursued by creatures sadly limited in intellectual ability compared to the Creator who created them.
What would be the consequence if two black holes traveling at velocities in the neighborhood of the velocity of light passed near each other in different directions? If their relative masses, velocities, and directions were just right, then one of them could receive a slingshot from the other and be hurled toward our galaxy at hyper-light velocity—which means that the black hole would arrive before its light, or any other warning, could tell us it was even coming.
The effects of the black hole could occur suddenly and without warning. Such effects might be similar to what the ancient author describes in this passage. Should this planet actually be drawn into a black hole, the meaning of a new order being established assumes a drastically different meaning.
In any case, there are a number of serious, scientifically-viable interpretations… and no compelling reason to view these passages as fantasy.
