Ya•a•qov's Reply

ca. B.C.E. 1966

Unaware that Râ•kheil had stolen Lâ•vân's tᵊrâph•im, Ya•a•qov replied to Lâ•vân, saying, "I fled stealthily because I was terrified. I reasoned that there was a danger that you would rob me of your daughters. Regarding your ël•oh•im, may whoever has them not live. In front of all of our brothers here, recognize your belongings that are with me and take them."

So Lâ•vân came into Ya•a•qov's tent, and into Leiâh's tent, and into the two tents of the maids; but he didn't find his tᵊrâph•im ël•oh•im. Then he left Leiâh's tent and came into Râ•kheil's tent.

But Râ•kheil had taken the tᵊrâph•im and put them in the saddle-rigging of her camel, and sat on them.

Lâ•vân searched all around her tent and didn't find them. Then he approached Râ•kheil, who was sitting on the camel, and she objected. "May a•don•i not be angry with me," she pleaded, "but I cannot get up in front of you because the way of women is upon me." So, although he searched, he didn't find the tᵊrâph•im.

Ya•a•qov Offended By Lâ•vân

Insulted by Lâ•vân's allegations and forceful searches (and still unaware that Râ•kheil had stolen his tᵊrâph•im), Ya•a•qov was angry, and quarreled with Lâ•vân.

"What's my crime?" Ya•a•qov blasted at Lâ•vân. "What's my misstep, that you were in hot pursuit after me? You've searched all my things. What things of your household did you find? Display it here before our brothers so they may prove which of the two of us is right!

"20 years I was with you! Your ewes and your doe goats weren't barren, nor did I eat any of your rams. When one of the herd was killed by a predator I didn't bring it to you. I absorbed the loss! You required it of me, no matter if it was stolen by day or stolen by night.

20 years there I was; in the daytime the searing sun parched me and at night I froze; I shivered and couldn't sleep. 20 years I've been in your household! I worked for you 14 years to marry your two daughters plus 6 years for a portion of your flock; and you 'bait & switched' my salary ten times!

If it wasn't for ël•oh•im of my father, the ël•oh•im of Avᵊrâ•hâm, and your fear of my father Yi•tzᵊkhâq who was on my side, you would have sent me away empty-handed by now. But ël•oh•im has seen my affliction and the toil of my palms—and last night He proved my case!"

Lâ•vân Conciliatory

Then Lâ•vân replied, saying to Ya•a•qov , "The daughters are my daughters too, and the children are my children too; the tzon are my tzon too. Everything you see is my legacy. So what can I do today for these my daughters, and for their children whom they have borne?

"So now, let us cut a bᵊrit, you and I; and let it be an òÅã between you and me."

Then Ya•a•qov took a stone and set it upright for a pillar and said to his brothers, "Gather stones!" Then they took stones and arranged them in a âÌÇì and they ate there on the âÌÇì. Lâ•vân called it Yᵊgar Sâ•ha•dut•â, while Ya•a•qov called it âÌÇìÀòÅã.

So Lâ•vân said, "This âÌÇì is òÅã between you and me today!" Therefore, they called its name âÌÇìÀòÅã—and äÇîÌÄöÀôÌÈä; for Lâ•vân said, "May é‑‑ä éÄöÆó against either of us attempting a sneak attack against the other.

"If you mistreat my daughters, or if you take wives above my daughters, though no man is with us, see, Ël•oh•im is òÅã between you and me."

"Look at this âÌÇì, Lâ•vân continued to Ya•a•qov, "and this pillar, which I set up between you and me. This âÌÇì is an òÅã, and this pillar is an òÅãÈä demarcating a border that neither of us will pass over this âÌÇì and this pillar toward the other with harmful intent. The Ël•oh•im of Avᵊrâ•hâm, and the ël•oh•im of my grandfather, brother of Avᵊrâ•hâm, Nâ•khor, adjudicate between us."

Then Ya•a•qov swore retaliation by his father, Yi•tzᵊkhâq (whom Lâ•vân feared), if Lâ•vân violated the bᵊrit.

So Ya•a•qov sacrificed on the mountain and called his brothers to eat bread. And they ate bread and lodged the night on the mountain.

Next morning, in the pre-dawn darkness (the customary time to begin a 30 km [close to 19 mi.] leg of a journey, on foot, before sunset), Lâ•vân got up, kissed his grandsons and daughters, blessing each of them, and then departed, returning home to A•râm, Syria.

Ya•a•qov, too, went on his way and some ma•lâkh•im of Ël•oh•im (from his home in Kᵊna•an) caught up with him. When Ya•a•qov saw them, he said, "This is îÇçÂðÅä Ël•oh•im." So he called the name of that place "îÇçÂðÈéÄí."

Optional parental preparation:

  1. The parent may want to give some thought how to handle explaining the "way of women," depending on the age of the child. Further, it should be noted that the Tor•âh tradition has been, even from these pre-Sinai times, that whatever a menstruating woman sat upon was considered contaminated and unclean. Thus, Lâ•vân couldn't have searched Râ•kheil's saddle-rigging even if she had consented to dismount from the camel. This is probably the reason that Lâ•vân didn't insist.

Questions you might anticipate that your child might raise and be prepared to discuss:

  1. What does it mean to sear a steak?
  2. What does parch mean?
  3. What is a legacy?
  4. What is a pillar? Do you use your blocks (Legos, etc.) as pillars when you build?
