Then ël•oh•im spoke about all of the following things, saying,

§1 “I, Myself, am é‑‑ä, your ël•oh•im, Who extracted you from the land of Mi•tzᵊrayim, from beit a•vâd•im.

Click to enlargeThe concept of a superior being monitoring human behavior was not new; dating from at least as early as the idolatrous Egypt­ian Wadjet eye of Hōrus. The Ha•vᵊdâl•âh is that é‑‑ä is the only Supreme Creator-Singularity and, being non-physical, therefore any anthropomorphism is idolatry!

§2 “You shall not have other ël•oh•im about-My Face; compris­ing neither any sculpture nor any depiction of any god – neither in the heavens above, nor from within the earth core beneath, nor from under the sea; do not bow to them nor work for them; because I, Myself, am your ël•oh•im, a qan•â Eil, Who monitors the â•wōn of fathers about sons to the 3rd and 4th generations of those who eschew Me; but I make khësëd for thousands of those who love Me – i.e. those who are sho•meir of My mi•tzᵊw•ot.

§3 “Don't raise-up your right hand representing the Name of é‑‑ä for a misleading equivocation; for é‑‑ä shall not yᵊnaq•ëh whomever shall lift-up his right hand profaning His Name for a misleading equivocation.

§4 “Remember Yom Sha•bât, to keep it qōdësh; Six days you shall do all of your mᵊlâkh•âh!!! But Yom Shᵊviy•iy is the Sha•bât of your ël•oh•im; do not do any mᵊlâkh•âh – neither you nor your sons, nor your daughters, nor your workers – whether male or female, nor even your beasts nor your geir•im that are within your gates. Because six days were equated to é‑‑ä making the heavens and -ârëtz, the sea and everything in them. Then He relaxed on Yom Shᵊviy•iy; for é‑‑ä blessed Yom ha-Sha•bât and He made it qōdësh!

§5 “Respect your [sho•meir-Tor•âh] father and mother in order that your days may be long on the a•dâm•âh that é‑‑ä you ël•oh•im gives you.

§6 “Don't murder.

§7 “Don't be a hedonist.

§8 “Don't steal.

§9 “Don't perjure yourself answering your fellow.

§10 “Don't covet your fellow's house, nor your fellow's wife, nor his butler nor his parlormaid, nor his equipment, nor his vehicle, nor anything else that belongs to your fellow.”

When all of -âm heard the howling winds, saw the heavenly torches, heard the thunderings of the heavenly sho•phâr and saw the smoke ascending from the brush fires on the Har, they ran away in waves and stood far off.

Then they said to Mōsh•ëh, "Speak to us and we will hearken. But may ël•oh•im not speak to us lest we die."

So Mōsh•ëh replied to -âm, "Don't be awestruck thinking that ha-ël•oh•im came for the purpose of test-proving you; but rather for the purpose that awe of Him should be in your faces, to deter you from misstepping."

While -âm stood far off, Mōsh•ëh merged into the smoky-haze shrouding -Eil.

Then é‑‑ä told Mōsh•ëh,

“Tell Bᵊn•ei-Yi•sᵊrâ•eil,

‘You have seen for yourselves that it was from the heavens that I spoke with you. You shall not make yourselves any peer with me; not gods of silver nor even gods of gold. Don't make them!

‘For Me, though, make the mi•zᵊbeiakh of a•dâm•âh and butcher your ōl•ōt and shᵊlâm•im of your tzōn and your cattle. I will come to you and bless you in every place where I memorialize My Name.

‘When you construct a mi•zᵊbeiakh of stone, however, you shall not use hewn stones; because if you use a tool on them then you've made it khōl.

‘Nor shall you ascend to My mi•zᵊbeiakh by steps, so that your nakedness under your kaftan not be exposed to it.’ ”

Optional parental preparation:

  1. What does it mean to mislead? Equivocate? How is that different from lying?

  3. ìÇùÑÌÈåÀà – misleading, equivocating, prevaricating, spinning, spouting PC, propagandizing, "fake news" (all = "nothingness, worthlessness"). The meaning is clarified by comparing and contrasting with its two primary synonyms:

  4. úÄøÀöÈç: murder – not "kill", which would contradict Biblical commands to kill in certain circumstances; e.g., kill kâ•sheir animals for food, enemies in war, execute murderers, etc.). Return to text

  5. úÌÄðÀàÈó the meaning of the BH: includes, but is more general than, the pre-Christian definition of adultery. This early meaning is informed by the historic understanding of this same word in the Aramaic: "to be unchaste, voluptuous, esp. to have illicit intercourse; to commit adultery."

    The original definition of this verb, ðÈàÇó, was authored by Yi•sᵊr•â•eil within its historically polygynous context. Millennia after the fact, however, this term was redefined as it is widely understood today, among Jews as well as Christians and Muslims – i.e. according to Hellenist Romans living in the monogamous European Roman Empire as early as its translation as the Hellenist Roman anti-polygamous definition of μοιχεύσεις in the LXX.

    In 70 and 135 CE, Hellenist-Tzᵊdoq•im Roman-collaborator (Ash•kᵊnazim and Sᵊphâ•râd•im) Jews fleeing the Hellenist Roman, miso-Judaic, ethnic cleansing of Jews from Judea and Yᵊru•shâ•layim, took refuge in the – monogamous – Hellenist European Roman Empire, where their polygamy was detested by the surrounding goy•im as sordid and disreputable. Despite the Hellenist Roman monogamous redefinition, Yi•sᵊr•â•eil remained polygynous until the 11th century C.E. when European rabbis finally acculturated to the European (Hellenist) Christian tradition.

    Understanding of the term ðÈàÇó must be analyzed within the context of the original, polygyny-tolerant, authors.

    By Biblical standards, polygyny is an acceptable family unit. Further, in Biblical times, having sex with an unmarried woman constituted one of three valid and acceptable forms of commencing a marriage, requiring subsequent payment of a dowry.

    A priori, the Biblical definition of adultery necessarily involved a married woman having sex with a man other than her husband. Ergo, the Biblical definition of adultery does not apply to a married man having sex with an unmarried woman other than his wife; which is the supersessive Christian-assimilated definition of adultery. The Christian-assimilated redefinition neither changes the original Biblical standard of polygynous adultery, nor does it exclude any of the aspects of the wider definition of ðÈàÇó/​hedonism & dissoluteness generally, wherein polygynous-adultery is merely one aspect.

    Accordingly, the primary meaning of the verb ðÈàÇó was "unchaste"; i.e. hedonistic, dissolute, licentious, lascivious, lecherous,salacious or promiscuous. Thus, ðÈàÇó is significantly broader than merely illicit sexual relations with a woman married to another man (i.e. Biblical adultery), as customarily mistranslated based on Hellenist Roman-translations and redacted texts. In fact, the primary meaning – hedonistic – grounds the closely-related later Talmudic concept, rabbinically-evolved from this 7th principle, of the pejorative "àÆôÌÄé÷åÉøåÉñ," to include heretics, skeptics, agnostics and seculars rather than a narrower definition of only adulterers per se – this despite rabbinic distortion of Khaj•im and Mō•ad•im to glorify àÆôÌÄé÷åÉøåÉñ (gluttonous) culinary "feasting." Return to text

  6. Lit. òÅã ùÑÈ÷Æø, lit. lying testimony (i.e. under oath), i.e. perjury. Return to text

  7. A day is measured by one complete rotation of the earth on its axis relative to the sun, which takes 24 hrs. Yet, the sun wasn't created until the 4th "day" (bᵊ-Reish•it 1.14-19). Ergo, the 6 "days" of creation cannot be 6 days as we know them and are, rather, perceived as 6 eons – which we equate to 6 weekdays. The sense is that, just as é‑‑ä, upon completing creation, ceased mᵊlâkh•âh on our physical universe, so, too, we are required to follow His example by ceasing mᵊlâkh•âh on Sha•bâtReturn to text

  8. While butlers, housekeepers and parlormaids were owned in Biblical times, so were wives. Just as today's wives are partners rather than human property, today's equivalent butlers, housekeepers and parlormaids are employees rather than slaves/​servants. Return to text

  9. åÀæÈáÇçÀúÌÈ – Millennia before supermarkets, the killing of a (kâ•sheir only domestic livestock) animal for meat was up close and personal; not like modern shoppers have become accustomed: just another tray of nylon-wrapped food on a tray – no different from the other refrigerated baked goods, sauces and fresh vegetables, or a can of beans, a package of pasta or a box of cereal; all of which magically appear on the shelves of a supermarket with a price on them.

    The taking of an animal's life, while permissible to eat meat, merited solemn realization that man was taking the life of an animal that é‑‑ä created and gave life. Butchery in the Biblical era comprised the solemn kâ•sheir sacrifice of the animal, on an approved bâm•âh/​mi•zᵊbeiakh, by a kō•hein trained in the Tōr•âh laws of kâ•shᵊr•ūt, offering the appropriate bᵊrâkh•ōt of thanks to é‑‑ä

    Centuries later, since the Beit ha-Mi•qᵊdâsh was destroyed, sacrifices became no longer possible – leaving the kâ•sheir shō•kheit in place of the kō•hein and his shop in place of a bâm•âh /​ mi•zᵊbeiakhReturn to text

  10. How did communal altars differ from a national altar? How did that relate to unifying a national kindred that prohibited local communal altars? How did loss of the national altar affect the kindred since communal altars remained prohibited?
