2000.03.29 The Jerusalem Post, p. 3 – "Following [knitted-kip•âhꞋ-wearing modern-Orthodox Israeli] Attorney-General Ël•yâq•imꞋ Rubinstein's recommendation that police investigate Sha"s spiritual leader Rabbi O•vad•yâhꞋ Yo•seiphꞋ, the Kha•reid•iꞋ daily ha-Mō•diꞋya launched a strong attack on modern-Orthodox Jews.
" 'Had Rubinstein been a secular Jew rather than one who wears a knitted kip•âhꞋ, the outcome would have been different, very different,' the paper said.
"Such comments have been heard frequently since Rubinstein's decision [initiating a police investigation of Rabbi Yo•seiphꞋ, whether his public remark equating secular Education MK Sarid to Hâ•mânꞋ constitutes indictable incitement] was published [Shein•iꞋ bᵊ-Sha•bâtꞋ = Day2 of the week]…
Such attacks were rejected in the KᵊnësꞋët yesterday by a variety of religious [this means Orthodox in Israel] MKs…
" 'The article is the declaration of war and wild incitement against the knitted-kip•âhꞋ-wearing community," said the National Religious Party's Na•khumꞋ Langental."
Note: this editor is a knitted-kip•âhꞋ-wearing modern-Orthodox (= national religious Zionist) Jew.
Also illuminating this same distinction during the past week, ëÌÈì äÇëÌÈáåÉã! to Jewish Defamation League's Israeli director Rabbi David Rosen's willingness, with good reason, to stand specifically behind his earlier characterization, in his review of the Pope's visit, of Kha•reid•imꞋ as "medieval."
The hi-liting this past week of the distinction between the ultra-Orthodox anti-Zionist Kha•reid•imꞋ and the modern-Orthodox religious Zionists, is both crucial and encouraging, since it is the modern-Orthodox religious Zionists, not the ultra-Orthodox fanatic fundamentalist Kha•reid•imꞋ anti-Zionists, who offer the sole hope of attracting the 90% estranged Jewish community to want to make tᵊshuv•âhꞋ to úÌåÉøÈä – both here and in the Tᵊphutz•âhꞋ.
In the past, anti-religious secular Jews and traditional Jews have remained carelessly, or perhaps conveniently, unaware of scientific and logical modern-Orthodox / religious Zionist Judaism. Oblivious to the modern-Orthodox, "secular" Jews who oppose "religious" Jews have always found it convenient to define the religious / Orthodox as consisting exclusively of medieval Kha•reid•imꞋ. While it has, therefore, been a simple matter for anti-religious Jews to paint all "religious" Jews as superstitious ignoramuses using the wide brush of medieval Kha•reid•imꞋ, it's impossible for them to defend such criticism of modern-Orthodox Judaism. The very logic and science with which "secular" Jews pride themselves contradicts their wrongly-directed misrepresentations and argues compellingly for modern-Orthodox Judaism.
The recent focusing of public attention on the distinctions between these two dissimilar versions of Orthodox Judaism is, therefore, vital to the retrieval to úÌåÉøÈä of estranged Jews everywhere.
