The Wrath Of é‑‑ä For Anthropomorphism

Spring-Summer, year 2 following c B.C.E. ; Area From Rᵊphid•im South To Har Sin•ai

Then Mōsh•ëh said to them, “Thus says é‑‑ä, ël•ōh•ei Yi•sᵊr•â•eil:

“Every man strap your sword on your hip. The go back and forth in the camp, from shaar to shaar, and each ish kill his brother, each ish his neighbor and each ish whomever is nearby him.”

So Bᵊn•ei-Lei•wi did as Mōsh•ëh had spoken. And about 3,000 ish of the am fell that day.

Then Mōsh•ëh had said, “ Commission your hands today to é‑‑ä! For the ish has been slain by his son, or by his brother. Now take upon yourself today a bᵊrâkh•âh.”

And so it was that, from the very next day, Mōsh•ëh said to the am, “You have absolutely misstepped, incurring a great misstep-punishment. Now I shall ascend to é‑‑ä. Perhaps I can obtain ki•pūr for your misstep-sacrifice.”

Then Mōsh•ëh ascended again to é‑‑ä, saying “Prithee, this am has absolutely misstepped incurring a great misstep-punishment having made for themselves an ël•ōh•im of gold. Yet, now—if You will—may You bear their punished-misstep; but if not, prithee, blot me out from Your Seiphër that You have written."

Then é‑‑ä said to Mōsh•ëh,

“Whomever has misstepped toward Me, it is him whom I shall blot out of My Seiphër.

“So now go. Guide the am to where I spoke to you. Look, My ma•lᵊâkh goes in front of you. But on the day of My Auditing, then I shall Audit their misstep-punishment upon them.

Thus, é‑‑ä plagued the am for being responsible for making the calf (which A•ha•rōn had made).

é‑‑ä spoke to Mōsh•ëh:

“Go! Make a•liy•âh from here, you and -âm, whose a•liy•âh from Ërëtz Mi•tzᵊrayim you oversaw, to -ârëtz — the ërëtz flowing with khâ•lâv and dᵊvâsh that I swore to Avᵊrâ•hâm, to Yi•tzᵊkhâq and to Ya•a•qōv saying, ‘To your seed I shall give it’.

I will send a ma•lᵊâkh before you (thus I will chase-out the Kᵊna•an•im of the Levant, the Ë•mor•i who have migrated from Syria, the Khit•im who have invaded from W. Turkey, the Pᵊriz•im Bedouin nomads, the Khiv•im who have infiltrated from Southern Lebanon and the Yᵊvus•im who inhabit the Yᵊru•shâ•layim area) for I will not be in your midst while making a•liy•âh—lest I chew you up along the dërëkh because you are such a stiff-necked am.

Now when the am heard this bad news, they mourned; and no ish donned his bling.

Then é‑‑ä said to Mōsh•ëh,

“Tell Bᵊn•ei-Yi•sᵊrâ•eil, ‘ You are a stiff-necked am! The first moment that I would make a•liy•âh in your midst I would chew you up. So, right now, put down your bling! I’ll know what to do to you.’ ”

So, from Har Khor•eiv onward, Bᵊn•ei-Yi•sᵊrâ•eil stripped themselves of their bling.

Optional parental preparation:

  1. What is anthropomorphism? Is anthropomorphism different from idolatry?

  2. Demonstrate what it means to blot (ink, spilled juice on the table, etc.)

  3. 33.02 — The ma•lᵊâkh was probably é‑‑ä’s use of the Egyptian Par•ōh to accomplish His Will. For centuries, Egypt had been plagued by the threat of enemy peoples infiltrating the Levant from Syria and the East—tentacles of Eastern Power enemies of Egypt at their door. As a result, the Levant was a long-time battlefront where the ancient Superpower, Egypt, repeatedly fought back the threat of these infiltrators. pushing them back north and east out of the Levant. This presented a providentially fortuitous opportunity for Mōsh•ëh to reestablish good relations with Egypt after the Yᵊtzi•âh—offering military assistance to the Egyptian Superpower in clearing the Levant of its enemies from the East. As a bonus, this also afforded Yᵊho•shua Bin-Nun, Mōsh•ëh’s protégé and Israel’s first Chief of Staff, to carry out the occasional operation against obstacles to Israeli return to their ancestral homes. Return to textRainbow Rule
